Deposit & insurance — how it works when renting in Kosovo
In short: Every car on KosovaRent shows its deposit before you book — most economy cars sit between €100 and €300. You pay the deposit online to hold the car, it counts toward the all-in total, and the rest is settled at pickup. Insurance (third-party liability plus collision damage waiver with an excess) is included by the rental company on every car.
How the deposit works
The deposit is shown on every car card and on the detail page before you book — never as a surprise at pickup. Most economy cars sit between €100 and €300; pricier categories list their deposit just as clearly.
You pay the deposit online at booking (card via PayPal, or bank redirect) to hold the car. It is not an extra charge: the deposit is deducted from the all-in total, and you settle the remainder at pickup with the rental company.
Deposit vs. security guarantee at the desk
At handover the operator checks the car with you, and you both sign off on its condition. The same happens at return: damage liability is assessed jointly at handover and return, never after you hand back the keys. Companies on KosovaRent cannot charge for damage once the return check is done.
What insurance is included
Every listed car carries the operator's fleet insurance. That means two layers by default:
- Third-party liability (TPL) — mandatory by law; covers damage you cause to other people, vehicles and property.
- Collision damage waiver (CDW) — covers damage to the rental car itself, above an excess ("deductible") stated in the contract.
The excess is the maximum you can be liable for if the car is damaged — it is typically in the range of the deposit shown on the car page. Everything above the excess is the insurer's problem, not yours.
What CDW does not cover
Standard CDW exclusions apply on almost every fleet. You remain liable for:
- Tyres, glass (windscreen and windows), undercarriage and interior damage
- Lost keys or lost vehicle documents
- Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Crossing borders the company has not authorised
- Off-road driving
Cross-border coverage
For trips outside Kosovo, the rental company provides the insurance green card — the certificate border police check. Albania, North Macedonia and Montenegro are usually included at no extra cost. Serbia needs a separate green-card extension (€15–€30), arranged by the company before pickup — flag it in your booking notes.

Tips before you drive off
- Photograph the car at handover — all four corners, wheels and the interior. Timestamped photos settle any discussion at return.
- Check the green card and the countries listed on it if you plan to cross a border.
- Confirm the excess amount stated in the rental contract before signing.
- Note any existing damage on the handover checklist and make sure the operator initials it.
Common questions
When do I get the deposit back?
If you cancel at least 48 hours before pickup, the deposit is refunded in full. If you rent as planned, the deposit is not a separate hold — it is part of the all-in total, so you simply pay the remainder at pickup.
Is insurance included in the price?
Yes. Every listed car carries the rental company's fleet insurance: mandatory third-party liability plus collision damage waiver with an excess. The all-in price you see includes it — there is no compulsory insurance upsell at the desk.
Can I reduce the excess to zero?
Some operators offer optional full-cover / zero-excess protection as an opt-in extra at checkout. Like all extras on KosovaRent, it is never pre-checked — you add it only if you want it, with the price shown line by line.
What if I damage the car?
Damage is assessed jointly with the company at handover and at return — never after you hand back the keys. Your maximum liability is the excess stated in the rental contract, typically in the range of the shown deposit.
Do I need extra insurance from third-party sites?
No. Border police and the rental companies only accept the operator's own green-card certificate. Third-party "excess insurance" sold by comparison sites is not recognised at handover or at the border.
Is the deposit charged again at the desk?
No. The deposit you paid online is deducted from the all-in total, and you settle only the remainder at pickup. The company checks the car with you and notes its condition — there is no second cash deposit hidden until the desk.
